چکیده
Introduction: Bacterial vaginosis is defined as change in the vaginal ecology characterized by replacement of lactobacilli by a variety of bacterial flora including anaerobes. The condition is diagnosed using Amsel Criteria. Ten to fifteen percent of cases do not improve on antibiotics, which encouraged the use of probiotics. Aim: To compare between the efficiency of probiotic vaginal tampons and oral metronidazole in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis. Patients & Methods: Three hundred and three qualified cases -of which 270 case continuedwere subjected to history, general, abdominal, local examination including speculum examination and investigations in the form of pH strip indictor, vaginal swab from the discharge, 10% potassium hydroxide (KOH) added to perform Whiff test and finally vaginal smear, then the patients were divided into 2 groups Group 1 consisted of 151 patients receiving oral metronidazole for one week and Group 2 received oral placebo and probiotic vaginal tampons for one week. All patients had follow-up after 10 and 30 days from the start of treatment to assess the efficacy of treatment and assess persistence or recurrence respectively and data were collected. Results: There was insignificant difference between both groups as regards age or the type of contraception used. Follow-up after 30 days showed a significant difference in the cure rate between both groups in favor of the probiotic vaginal tampons (91.8% vs 57.8%). Conclusion: Probiotic vaginal tampons are superior to oral metronidazole in the treatment of bacterial vaginosis with the advantages of avoiding drug side effects and resistance. *Corresponding author: Haitham A. A comparison of the efficacy of metronidazole vaginal gel and Myrtus (Myrtus communis) extract combination and metronidazole vaginal gel alone in the treatment of recurrent bacterial vaginosis
Objective: Due to the high incidence of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and its resistance to chemical medications and considering the anti-bacterial and anti-fungal effects of Myrtus communis, the present study aimed to compare the therapeutic effects of the vaginal gel of M. communis 2% (in metronidazole base) with metronidazole vaginal gel 0.75% alone on BV.Materials and Methods: This research was ...

متن کاملSupplementation of standard antibiotic therapy with oral probiotics for bacterial vaginosis and aerobic vaginitis: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
BACKGROUND This multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was performed to determine whether the use of oral probiotic preparation (prOVag®) containing three Lactobacillus strains together with standard metronidazole treatment and also targeted antibiotic treatment (following the failure of metronidazole therapy) could reduce the recurrence rates of bacterial vaginosis (BV...
متن کاملComparison of oral and vaginal metronidazole for treatment of bacterial vaginosis in pregnancy: impact on fastidious bacteria
BACKGROUND Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition that is associated with preterm birth and acquisition of complex communities of vaginal bacteria that include several fastidious species. Treatment of BV in pregnancy has mixed effects on the risk of preterm delivery, which some hypothesize is due to variable antibiotic efficacy for the fastidious bacteria. Both oral and intravaginal met...

Background: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most prevalent causes of abnormal secre-tion in women at fertility age. Also, Bacterial vaginosis is one of the most common dis-eases in women who refer to gynecology clinic. The main cause of the pathogenesis is increasing pH of vagina due to reduced number of lactobacillus and growth of anaero-bic bacteria. Prevalence of BV varies between 10 to 30 p...
